| May 11: Launch of Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020On Wednesday, May 11, the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 was launched around the world. ASIRT, in collaboration with several road safety partners, organized a day of events on Capitol Hill to launch the Decade in Washington, DC. For more information, please see the press release. |
| ASIRT holds 2010 Kenyan Road Safety Stakeholder & NGO ConferenceASIRT, in collaboration with ASIRT-Kenya, held a one-day conference held on July 29th in Nairobi. Attendees and speakers included leaders from Kenyan civil society, road safety NGOs, government, the business community, international organizations and the media. The purpose of the event was to highlight recent road safety developments in Kenya and abroad, identify opportunities for multi-sectoral collaboration and mobilize civil society to become active in road safety. |
| World Day of Remembrance 2010ASIRT commemorated World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and their Families (officially observed annually on the third Sunday of November) with a program on Monday, November 22. This intimate event, held in the ASIRT offices, featured a presentation about World Day of Remembrance events around the world as well as the opportunity for guests to share personal stories and memories.
ASIRT's website also featured a Wall of Remembrance, where visitors could post about the day and personal experiences. |
| ASIRT Holds “Seat-Buckling” Ceremony to Celebrate Opening of New OfficesOn October 14, ASIRT celebrated the move of its offices to its new location in Nonprofit Village in Rockville, Maryland with a “seat-buckling” ceremony in place of the traditional ribbon cutting. The event was attended by Maryland leadership at the local, state and national levels; Maryland transportation officials; and members of the local community.
ASIRT President Rochelle Sobel and members of ASIRT staff and board were joined by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, MVA Administrator John Kuo (representing Governor Martin O’Malley), Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler and Joan Kleinman, District Director of the Office of Representative Chris Van Hollen.

| ASIRT Annual Gala: "Partners in Action for Global Road Safety"ASIRT’s Annual Gala, “Partners in Action for Global Road Safety,” was held on June 2, 2010 at the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The event was attended by supporters from the United States government, the diplomatic community, global road safety experts and the medical community, as well as corporate sponsors. ASIRT recognized the United States Department of State for its commendable efforts on behalf of road safety, and the keynote address was delivered by Jacob J. Lew, Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources, U.S. Department of State. Additionally, several prominent ASIRT board members, Steven and Sharon Lieberman and Andrew Koblenz, and a Youth Leader, Avital Friedman, were honored for their dedication and contribution to ASIRT’s global road safety mission. |
| First Global Ministerial Conference on Road SafetyOn November 19-20, the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety was hosted by the Russian Federation in Moscow. ASIRT President and Founder Rochelle Sobel delivered the final speech of the conference, representing the global NGO community. The conference produced the historic "Moscow Declaration," signed by ministers of 150 countries, calling for a Decade of Action for Road Safety. |
| World Day of Remembrance 2009Sunday, November 15, 2009, is this year's World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. First established in 2007 by U.N. Resolution A760/5, every third Sunday in November is dedicated to road traffic victims and their families. ASIRT has taken a lead role in promoting the recognition of this day in the U.S. and abroad. | Road Safety Reception at Embassy of Russian FederationOn September 30, 2009, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, with the support of ASIRT, hosted a reception on the occasion of the upcoming First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, to be held in Moscow on November 19-20. Speakers included Ambassador Kislyak; Lord George Robertson, Chairman of the Commission for Global Road Safety; Congressman Robert Wexler, Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety; and Rochelle Sobel, ASIRT Founder and President. |
| WHO Launch of Global Status Report on Road SafetyRochelle Sobel, ASIRT Founder and President, and Cathy Silberman, ASIRT Executive Director, were among the guests invited to the releae of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Status Report on Road Safety. The press conference began with a screening of a video that highlights remarks by Rochelle, as well as Casey Marenge and Dr. Adnan Hyder (JHSPH), who have both participated in global road safety caucus-sponsored briefings on the Hill. They each shared their experiences and knowledge about the issue in very compelling and articulate ways. Mayor Bloomberg reiterated his commitment to this issue and his support of the cause will no doubt help to advance efforts over the next decade. | World Day of Remembrance- Silver Spring ParadeThe Silver Spring Parade, co-sponsored by ASIRT and Montgomery County, was held on November 22, 2008 in downtown Silver Spring, MD to promote World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims and their Families. Participants distributed remembrance bracelets that promote ASIRT's and Montgomery County's websites and encourage everyone to make their neighborhoods and communities safer. |
| World Day of Remembrance- Dupont Circle VigilFor World Day of Remembrance, on Sunday, November 16, 2008, ASIRT held a vigil in partnership with Rotary International in Dupont Circle, a busy pedestrian park in the heart of Washington, D.C. The vigil included the reading aloud of names of road crash victims, addresses by key political leaders, a concert, candle lighting service and a call to action. |

| For World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims...to be observed on November 18, we will launch A Day Without Road Crashes. By taking specific action steps we can decrease the number of road crash victims and help curb one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The attached handout is intended to provide useful suggestions on ways that your community can participate in A Day Without Road Crashes. To further honor the memory of road crash victims, we suggest that you organize candle lighting ceremonies and vigils, to be held on the evening of November 18, in publicly accessible and safe spaces in your community. |
