Global Status Report on Road Safety (WHO)

WHO produced this Global Status Report in 2009, after conducting the "first broad assessment of the status of road safety in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey conducted in 2008. The results provide a benchmark that countries can use to assess their road safety position relative to other countries, while internationally the data presented can collectively be considered as a global "baseline" against which progress over time can be measured" (WHO, vii). The Global Status Report highlights important findings, such as the fact that over 90% of road traffic fatalities occur in low and middle-income countries, as well as recommendations on how to move forward.

World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention (WHO)

WHO worked with international partners, including ASIRT, to produce the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention, published in 2004. The World Report serves as a framework for road safety efforts worldwide, providing a clear set of recommendations for action. The report identifies five key risk factors that contribute to the increase in road crashes:

1. Non-use of safety belts and child restraints
2. Drink driving
3. Non-use or inadequate use of helmets
4. Excessive speed
5. Lack of or inadequate infrastructure
