Institute for Global Learning summer program in Morocco for students from member schools
For the past several years, the Institute for Global Learning (formerly the Global Education Benchmark Group, or GEBG) has partnered with ASIRT to provide vital road safety updates and resources to schools leading international travel programs. With a network of more than 400 member schools and districts, the Institute supports educators in connecting students with the wider world—both in the classroom and through meaningful, immersive travel experiences.
The organization began in 2008, when a group of 16 school leaders—deeply committed to global education—came together to share best practices. One of their earliest priorities was managing the risks associated with student travel abroad. From those early efforts, the community grew quickly. By 2013, GEBG had become a registered nonprofit, offering institutional support, professional development, and travel risk management tools to a growing number of schools and educators.
Over the following decade, the organization expanded to serve hundreds of schools across 23 countries, offering a broad range of programs and resources. In 2024, reflecting this growth and evolution, GEBG became the Institute for Global Learning. This rebranding—developed in partnership with creative studio Evergib and guided by staff and board leadership—better reflects the organization’s vision and the breadth of its work today and in the future.
While the Institute’s offerings span many aspects of global and experiential education, supporting safe and effective off-campus learning, including international travel, remains a central priority. The longstanding partnership with ASIRT has played a key role in that mission.
Through this collaboration, ASIRT’s expert insights and detailed road safety reports are now reaching hundreds of schools in the U.S., Canada, and beyond. By embedding these resources into its guidance, the Institute for Global Learning is equipping educators to make informed decisions and better prepare students for enriching international experiences.
Together, the Institute for Global Learning and ASIRT are advancing the quality, safety, and impact of global education for thousands of students each year.
